The Twins

“What about human beings? said the animals. Do you
think we need human beings?
Why not? said the Twins. And as quick as they could the
right-handed Twin created women, and the left-handed
Twin created men.
They don’t look too bright, said the animals. We hope
they won’t be a problem.
Don’t worry, said the Twins, you guys are going to get
along just fine.”

― Thomas King, The Truth About Stories: A Native Narrative

Justice was chosen to be the town’s messenger. Once a year, the town elected a messenger and sent them to speak with the world creators, the twins, to ask for a blessing. Most years went fine. The messenger would offer a sacrifice and pray to the twins at the top of the mountain and then return home, exhausted from their long journey, but otherwise okay. Occasionally, however, the twins would be enraged by the request, or by the messenger themselves, and would smite them, or curse them, or send them on an impossible journey. No one knew the will of the twins or why they did what they did, but Justice was afraid, and the twins knew it.
