“I love days like this, they have such chaotic energy.”
—My friend who woke up at 3:30 this morning and drank a pot of coffee
If you had to describe the energy of your OCs in one word, what would it be? Make a list of your OCs (it can be all the characters from one story, or any characters you want to develop more) and for each character chose a word. Consider what actions, what thoughts, what phrases this character uses to portray that energy. For a more in-depth exercise, consider what word your characters would chose for one another and why. When you’ve made your list, reflect on your writing so far. How have you portrayed your characters energy? If you can’t narrow down your description of the character to one (or maybe a few) words, are they perhaps too confused as a character? Can you make them more concrete? Do you think your audience would agree with the word you’ve chosen? The goal, when making well-rounded characters, is to make them believable and life like. So, to help you with this exercise, think of what word you would chose to describe your own energy, or your friend’s energy, and why? Would you and your friend agree? Why or why not? Consider how perspective and life experience may change your answer.
