“I will play you Mozart, if you like, which will only make you weep; but my Don Juan, Christine, burns; and yet he is not struck by fire from Heaven…. You see, Christine, there is some music that is so terrible that is consumes all those who approach it.”
–Gaston Leroux, The Phantom of the Opera, pg. 152
Write about a monster who is both appalling and yet human. The monster does not have to look human or even speak, but the reader must be able to sympathize with it. Write from the perspective of someone victimized by the monster who is finding themselves in a moral dilemma. The monster is hurting them in some way, but they can’t help but feel for the creature. Describe the monster in detail, the way it looks and acts. Consider how it became what it is. At the end of the story, write about the people rising to destroy the monster. What will your main character do? Protect it? Or watch it die?
