Faceless

“Face your life, its pain, its pleasure, leave no path untaken.”

― Neil Gaiman, The Graveyard Book

Darren came to a fork in the road, both paths looked about the same. Because he didn’t know where he was going anyway, he decided to start down the left path and, if he got bored, he would head back and go down the right one. What he didn’t know was that the left path was cursed, and all those who went down it would have to face a great beast of mysterious origin. The beast was known as Faceless, and while no one had survived to tell the tale of their encounter, rumors of his existence were whispered about in nearby villages. Faceless could only reflect your face back to you, for he did not have a face of his own. He made you face your deepest fears, your shame, your failure. If you could defeat him, you left with your life, but if you couldn’t, he would add your face to his collection, or so it was said. Darren, however, had never heard of Faceless and, quite frankly, didn’t believe in “fairytales.” Whether or not Faceless was the one he would encounter, he was in for a rude awakening.
