“When we did not move or speak, there was no proof that we were there at all.”
–Marilynne Robinson, Housekeeping
Carrie liked to imagine that if she sat really still and made no noise at all, she could go invisible, but seeing as she wasn’t noticed much anyway, she would never really know. Until she made a friend. Sometimes, when they walked down the hall at school together, her friend would tell stories and then stop, look around and ask where Carrie was. “Right here,” she would say, and her friend would jump and then laugh, relieved. Carrie didn’t think much of it at first, but then it was happening all the time. Her friend panicked in the bathroom once because she couldn’t find Carrie until she tapped her on the shoulder and her friend screamed. Something wasn’t right… but was she really disappearing?
