Whale Watching

“He can see ocean behemoths gliding there, like submarines or bell-shaped orchids or the wide hulls of ships, silent, ever moving, the size of then conveying such a sense of power that he can feel the havoc of their passage even from so far above.”

–Jeff Vandermeer, Authority

The year is 2100, the oceans are empty. They’ve been empty for years, over-fished, polluted, and ultimately destroyed. They’re no longer safe for swimming, but you like to look out at the waves when the sun goes down. Watching the waves catch glimpses of the sun set. It’s beautifully enticing. You imagine that drowning, or even the slow poisoning from the pollution, would be better than suffering through the oncoming apocalypse, but just as you think this, a monstrous shadow breaches the waves miles away. It’s a momentary blot on the sun, but unmistakable in it’s colossus. Something was out there. Are you the only one who knows?
